| I have a few experiences in this area. Usually this happens to a troubled project. I'll give you my mental checklist.
1. Heart to heart with the sponsors - understand what they want to salvage and why.
2. Conduct 1-on-1 meetings with team members and other stakeholders to get the full view picture of the previous project
3. Go through the motions of a typical week with the team
4. Start making your changes
4a. Get the resources you need to fix the assessed problem.
4b. If there are resources on the project that were primary reasons for the failure position them in a role where they can introduce very little risk to the project, yet somehow make them feel valued.
4c. Create focus around an achievable deliverable (single view document - use again and again)
4d. Communicate honestly and openly with all members and stakeholders. (

| Hi Ian!
Thank you for offering your help! I try to create guidelines for general project management, altough they should be applied in IT projects. I am interested in your projects. Did you take them over from the responsibilty of a previous project manager? What were the reasons and how did the takeover go on?

| Hi everyone.
I am a german university student writing my dissertation about efficient takeover of running projects. Sadly I haven't found any useful stuff in the internet so far. This is why I want to open this thread to initiate a discussion on what steps needs to be done by a project manager who wants to take over a project which began and was lead by a different project manager in the past. Looking forward to your interesting answers!!
